Intensive English Course

The Intensive English Course (IEC) is a one-semester course designed for non-native speakers who wish to pursue academic studies in Malaysia. The main aim of IEC is to assist course participants to prepare for undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The course is specially designed for students to improve their English language proficiency in the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). The course will prepare them to use English for general and specific purposes using the integrated apporoach. It also encourages independent learning through Guided Enhancement Learning classes.

Course participants will have ample opportunities to develop their understanding of English language through well-designed tasks and learner-centred activities. Consequently, this will help enhance their confidence in the use of the language.

In ensuring participants benefit fully from the course, lessons are conducted through a variety of ways and in a number of settings. Apart from the classroom setting, participants will also experience learning in state-of-the-art digital language laboratories, and through planned fieldtrips.

IEC is also open to interested individuals who wish to spend a period of time in Malaysia and improve their English language. Spouses of registered international students are also welcome to join IEC.

General English Course

This language proficiency course is designed for non-native speakers of English like YOU who wish to improve your general ability in the language. It encompasses the skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of English grammar and increase your range of vocabulary as well as enhance your confidence in using the language. This modular type course emphasises on group interaction and active participation. Class size is limited to a maximum of 25.

English Communication Skills at the Workplace

This course is designed for employees working in public or private sectors in both technical and non-technical lines who wish to enhance their written and spoken communication skills at their respective workplace. The organization’s specific language challenges will be determined through a needs assessment and a custom-tailored programme is then created to meet the organization’s objectives. A session at the language digital laboratory is also included.

Effective Oral Presentation Skills

This hands-on course is designed for executives, managers, officers and anyone whose work involves making presentation at various settings. It focuses on the techniques and skills of delivering oral presentation and on enhancing self-confidence. As class size is limited to 15, participants will have ample practice to ensure effective delivery of oral presentation. Among the main elements covered in this course are:

  • Analysing audience
  • Structuring of oral presentation
  • Using appropriate delivery style
  • Handling question and answer session
  • Practicing acceptable pronunciation
