The Intensive English Course (IEC) is designed for non-native speakers who wish to pursue their academic studies in Malaysia. The main aim of IEC is to prepare students to develop the English language as a preparation to pursue their undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Specifically, the purpose of IEC is to equip learners with skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for academic as well as for social purposes.
UTM Entry Requirement Beginning Semester I, 2009/2010, all students applying to UTM must have a TOEFL or IELTS score. Students with a TOEFL score of 550 (or 79 IBT) or an IELTS Band 6.0 (Academic Module) will be enrolled in a faculty programme without undergoing the IEC. However, a student with a lower score and does not meet the entry requirement will have to attend and pass IEC for at least one semester or up to two semesters depending on his/her entry level (see table below). All students are required to attend and pass IEC at the Intermediate level before being allowed to register for their foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate programme. And since the IEC is a pre-requisite programme students enrolling in IEC are not allowed to register for any faculty course in the same semester.
Structure of IEC Programme IEC comprises four modules – Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking, and Self-Access Language Learning with a total of 22 contact hours a week. The course adopts the skills-based approach where all the four language skills are given due emphasis in the classroom. The Self-Access Language Learning allows students, on their own, to use the facilities in the state-of-the-art digital language laboratory for language learning.
Students will have ample opportunities to develop their understanding of English language through well-designed tasks and activities. The four skills, and the Self-Access Language Learning modules reinforce each other to further develop language proficiency and fluency.
