ACTIVITIES 2012

UTM STRENGTHENING TIES WITH KOREAN UNIVERSITIES

20 February 2012. UTM is continuously developing its ties with Korean Universities to enhance its international networking. On 16 February 2012, Prof. Dr. Khairul Anuar bin Abdullah, Managing Director/Dean of UTMSPACE, was invited by Jeonju University to witness the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTM and Jeonju University, Korea (JJ). Established in 1964, Jeonju University is located at Jeonju, south of Seoul. It is a famous tourist destination and popular with Korean food, historic buildings, sport activities and innovative festivals. Jeonju World Cup Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2002 was selected as the most beautiful stadium by FIFA executive committee. In short, Jeonju is well known as Korean Historical City. The MoU will provide UTM students and staff with the opportunity to study and explore Korean culture through Jeonju University Korean culture immersion program.

The collaboration was established by UTMSPACE after the visit from JJ delegates to UTMSPACE and UTM in July 2011. Further to the visit, a Letter of Intent was signed. In September 2011, JJ sends 8 students to UTM as part of a year abroad program. The students registered for Intensive English Course at UTMSPACE. In Semester II 2011/2012, the students will enroll at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information System (FSKSM). After the signing of MoU, JJ will send another 18 students for Semester II 2011/2012 to attend a similar program.

On 17 Feb 2012, Prof. Dr. Khairul Anuar visited Hannam University (HNU) by invitation from Dr.Kim Hyung-tae, the President of Hannam University, Daejon, South Korea. It was a returned visit after two Professors from HNU visited UTMSPACE and UTM in July 2011. A Letter of Intent was signed to look into the areas of collaboration between the two universities. UTM will be among the 147 overseas universities and 16 institutes from 32 countries which already have sister relationship with HNU. HNU is actively participated in students exchange programs. HNU offers internship program for outstanding UTM students.

HNU is located in Daejon City which is well known as the Silicon Valley of Korea. Daejeon is home of various private and public Research Institutes, Centers and Science parks (i.e. R&D centers of Samsung, LG, Korea University of Science and Technology & others are located within Daedeok Science Town in Yuseong-gu). Daejon is the South Korea’s fifth largest metropolis and features a technology cluster known as Daedeok Innopolis. The driving force for Daedeok is the organic circulation of ideas about technology and business between policy makers, researchers and businessmen working in the fields of telecommunications, nanofabrication, biotechnology, water, nuclear and hydro power, nuclear fusion, design, measurement technologies, mechanical engineering, fuel cells, aeronautics, new materials, robotics, new drugs and environmental technologies.

UTMSPACE also visited Global Education Support Center, Woosuk University. The matters discussed were students exchange, study abroad program and research collaboration. Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Woosuk University has a similar function as UTM Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP). It produces cosmetics and health products for commercialization. They are interested to establish join research especially in herbs products.

ACTIVITIES 2011

VISIT TO UNIVERSITIES IN THAILAND

On 17-18 January 2011, UTMSPACE visited King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, (KMUTT), Mahidol University International College (MUIC) and Mahasarakham University (MSU). The purpose of the visits was to develop cooperation among universities especially on student exchange, student mobility and continuing education. Following the visit a Memorandum of Agreement was signed on 31 January 2011 between MSU and UTM on the student exchange programme.




KOREA STUDY ABROAD FAIR 2011

UTMSPACE and other Malaysian Universities participated in Korea Study Abroad Fair 2011 on 25-27 March 2011. The programme was organized by the Department of Higher Education Malaysia. UTMSPACE promoted UTM undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, Intensive English Course, Summer School and others.



VISIT FROM FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES

From February to July 2011, there were several visits from foreign universities to UTMSPACE. The purpose of the visit is to establish collaboration with UTMSPACE on a few short term programs.

INTERNSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

There were three students from King Mongkut University of Technology, Thonburi, Thailand attended the internship program at Information and Communication Technology Unit from 4 April to 13 Mei 2011. The students involved in designing the inventory system for the unit. They also taught Thai language to the staff.



SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM

From May to July 2011, 8 programmes were conducted with 189 participants from various countries such as Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, South Korea, United Kingdom and Vietnam. They participated in formal and informal learning, which include classroom lectures, outdoor activities, study visits and homestays. They had the opportunity to learn and experience the Malaysian culture and traditions, explore the mangrove and tropical rain forest and interact with other participants. Participating UTM students were also able to expand their international networking and improve their communication skills.
